Behavioral Problems
Aggressive behavior, acting-out, withdrawal, selective mutism, argumentativeness, lack of impulse control, and age inappropriate sexual acting-out to name a few are all the symptoms of a greater underlying problem. While most teachers, parents, and other people in authority try to stop child’s negative behavior, I as a play therapist, try to understand why it happens and provide an opportunity for the child to express unfulfilled needs, feelings, and wants.
I provide a safe space in which painful unconscious struggles and negative feelings can be expressed and projected on toys. I am able to see the themes of the child’s play understand what those things are that a child is lacking or is trying to process. Using metaphors, stories, and games, I encourage a child to become more aware of their emotional and behavioral struggles and help them to learn new positive and more effective ways to express their feelings.
I closely work with parents and help them to understand and resolve the possible causes of negative behaviors. If there is a need, I assist parents in adjusting their parenting approach. I facilitate a process that enriches child-parent relationship. Together, we can prevent future behavioral problems and create the foundation of positive, socially appropriate behavioral expression.
Some of you might think that your child would out-grow it and the negative behavior will vanish on its own. Not likely! If you are doing the same thing, don’t expect different result. Your child’s future is not a matter for experimentation! Don’t wait till your child resents you, you resent him or her, and the situation completely goes out of control! Don’t wait till your child gets expelled from school and/or gets in trouble with the law. Don’t wait till they develop more serious behavioral and mental health issues such as oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), conduct disorder (CD), or reactive attachment disorder (RAD). Get help and start the positive change today while you can!
