Trauma
Trauma is personal experience which involves serious injury, death or threatened death, or witnessing an event of injury, death, and other type of threat to the physical or psychological integrity of another person. Person’s response to trauma usually involves intense fear, hopelessness, and horror. In children the emotional response to trauma might also include disorganized, regressed, and agitated behavior.
Such traumatic events include but are not limited to emotional and physical abuse, rape, sexual assault, domestic violence, childhood sexual abuse, robbery, kidnapping, torture, natural disaster, terrorist attacks, automobile accidents, life-threatening illnesses, war, and other events that cause a severe physical and emotional distress.
Childhood abuse might cause various symptoms and maladaptive behaviors later in life such as indiscriminate sexual behavior, reduced danger awareness, and substance abuse. All of this increases likelihood of future trauma, revictimization and mental disorders. Numerous studies have demonstrated that people who experienced interpersonal trauma such as childhood sexual or physical abuse, or partner battery are at significantly greater risk of being revictimized in the future. Individuals who experienced trauma in young age often display serious behavioral problems, relational/social disturbances, physical health problems, low self-esteem, and inability to care for oneself. Research suggests that individuals who were physically and sexually abused as children are likely to become perpetrators and abuse others as adults. Many individuals develop acute stress disorder (ASD), post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or brief psychotic disorder with marked stressors (BPDMS) as well as other mental health issues such as phobias, generalized anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, dissociative disorder, substance abuse, and addictions, etc.
